Salvage the Presidency

I caught a headline this afternoon on NY Times that read “McConnell, in Private, Doubts if Trump Can Save Presidency.”  The article goes on to read, “Mr. McConnell has privately expressed uncertainty that Mr. Trump will be able to salvage his administration after a series of summer crises.”  Summer crises, public snafu’s, missteps, etc.  Call them what you will.  But whatever your politic, the Trump presidency doesnt have to be salvaged.  He is the President for three more years, like it or not.  He can continue to utilize his Twitter account like a loaded gun and make a mess of public sentiment and it is highly unlikely that his standing as President changes.  But yes, Mr. McConnell, President Trump can be more effective…oh and more presidential.  And he can finally allow those around him to craft and enforce tightly controlled messaging around policy, as he seemingly did last night regarding Afghanistan.  All is not lost with President Trump.  Like him or not, he can have a lasting positive (yes, I said, “positive!”) effect on our country and our globe through smart tax and trade policies, social equality reforms and a change in heart on climate change.  But he needs to allow the message to stay on script or else, yes, he’ll continue as President, but those approval ratings will need some desperate salvaging…
